Julen Lopetegui rejected Tottenham Hotspur’s ‘dizzying’ offer

Speaking in an interview with Spanish radio station Cadena SER (h/t Evening Standard), Sevilla president Jose Castro has revealed that manager Julen Lopetegui has turned down a dizzying offer to become the next Tottenham Hotspur boss.

The past couple of months have been quite rocky for Tottenham as their pursuit of a new manager to replace Jose Mourinho hasn’t exactly gone to plans. The likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca, Gennaro Gattuso all being targeted but no move coming to fruition yet. (h/t Evening Standard)

Another manager who had been approached by Tottenham, as per the report, is Sevilla’s Julen Lopetegui. The ex-Real Madrid boss has led the La Liga club to the UEFA Europa League triumph in 2019/20 and took them comfortably to a top-four finish last time out. However, Sevilla president Castro has now confirmed that the manager turned down Spurs’ approach.

“Julen rang me and told me. He said he’d received offers he’d not listened to in addition to a dizzying one from Tottenham. But he said he doesn’t forget things and that he is very motivated here. We believed and believe in him, giving him a two-year contract extension, and I’m sure he will bring much more to the club.

“You see his ability and leadership every day. Some coaches are more driven by economic factors but Julen is very clear that he is happy here and he even said it would be very difficult to find a better place to work than here.”

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

Lopetegui, given his proven credentials, would have been a good appointment for Tottenham. However, it turns out the Spaniard wants to continue his project at Sevilla.

It has now been over two months since Mourinho was sacked by Spurs. The situation has turned chaotic and hopefully a resolution is around the corner.
