Transfer News: Tottenham set to battle Arsenal for Houssem Aouar

According to transfer news from the Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are set to battle it out with arch-rivals Arsenal for the signing of Olympique Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar.

Aouar came through the youth ranks at Lyon and broke into the first-team in 2016. Since then, he has been a regular presence with the senior squad gradually going onto establish himself as a constant starter for Les Gones, making over 150 appearances in which he has more than 60 direct goal contributions.

The 22-year-old featured 33 times across all competition for Lyon in 2020/21 season, finishing with eight goals and four assists, helping the team to a top-four finish in Ligue 1. While he continues to be held in high regard within the club, the effects of the pandemic on the finances have meant that Lyon are now looking to cash in on Aouar in the summer transfer window.

Arsenal have been long-term admirers of the midfielder who has featured 15 times for the France Under-21 national team and has one cap for Les Bleus senior team. And, they have now been joined by Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign the 22-year-old. (h/t Mirror)

With Dele Alli having struggled over the past couple of seasons and Tanguy Ndombele having not been able to hit top gear, it would make sense for Tottenham to add another creative midfielder to the ranks, considering as the club never really replaced Christian Eriksen.

Aouar, to that end, can be an impressive addition to the ranks for Tottenham, considering his age, all-round abilities and potential. With Lyon open to a sale, it will be interesting to see if Spurs do explore the possibility of a move for the Frenchman.
