Transfer News: Tottenham face AS Roma competition for Jannik Vestergaard

According to transfer news from Hampshire Live, Tottenham Hotspur are likely to face competition from Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma for the signing of Jannik Vestergaard this summer.

Vestergaard has been with Southampton since 2018 and has grown into a key player for the Saints over the past couple of seasons. However, the 28-year-old is entering the final year of his contract with the club, casting doubts over his future at St. Mary’s.

Tottenham, having done a deal with Southampton for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg last year, are planning on a similar swoop for Vestergaard in the current transfer window, according to The Athletic.

However, they are now likely to face competition from former manager Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma outfit, who are also keen on signing the Danish defender.

Vestergaard’s stock has been on the rise after his solid displays for Denmark in the ongoing UEFA Euro 2020. He, along with Tottenham’s own Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, have been impressing quite a bit for the Danes, helping them through to the semi-finals of the competition, where they will be facing England next week.

So, it should not come as a surprise that the interest in the 28-year-old seems to be increasing with time. Tottenham could certainly do with a defender of Vestergaard’s ilk, especially given that senior centre-half Toby Alderweireld has requested to leave the club this summer.

As for Southampton, they have made it clear in the past that they will do everything in their power to keep hold of Vestergaard in the summer. But given his contract situation and the rising interest, that may be easier said than done.

What remains to be seen is whether Tottenham are able to swoop the Denmark international away from under the noses of Jose.
