Transfer News: Tottenham interested in Sassuolo star Mert Muldur

According to transfer news from the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs tracking Sassuolo’s Turkish defender Mert Muldur, who is also a target for West Ham United.

Muldur came through the youth ranks at Austrian outfit Rapid Wien and went on to make 47 first-team appearances, in which he scored two goals and set up six more. The 22-year-old was signed by Sassuolo in the summer of 2019 and he has been a fairly regular member of the starting XI for the Neroverdi featuring 54 times till date, with two goals and four assists to show for. Muldur has been capped ten times by the Turkish national team as well and featured a few times in their ill-fated UEFA Euro 2020 campaign last month. And it seems like his exploits with the Serie A outfit have led to interest from Tottenham Hotspur in the ongoing summer transfer window.

Tottenham are in the need of a new right-back considering that Serge Aurier has informed of his decision to leave the club. With Matt Doherty not enjoying the best of the debut seasons upon arriving last summer, it makes sense for the club to bolster the right-back position further in the current window.

Takehiro Tomiyasu has been linked with a move quite heavily of late but the interest in Muldur could mean that the Japanese international is being viewed as an option at centre-back rather than at right-back. Nonetheless, the Lilywhites may have to battle London rivals West Ham United as well as a few other clubs in pursuit of the 22-year-old Turkish international.

It remains to be seen if there is any truth to the claims of Spurs’ interest in Muldur. Considering his age and the fact that he can play on the right and left sides with equal comfort, he would be quite a handy addition as Nuno Espirito Santo looks to usher in a new era at the club.
