Transfer News: Tottenham front-runners in race to sign Takehiro Tomiyasu

According to transfer news from reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham are leading Atalanta in the race to sign Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna this summer.

Tomiyasu began his career with Avispa Fukuoka in Japan before moving to Europe in January 2018 when he joined Belgian outfit Sint-Truiden. Having impressed heavily during his time with the club, the 22-year-old was signed by Bologna in the summer of 2019.

Tomiyasu has made 63 appearances for Bologna so far, in which he has scored and assisted three goals apiece. The 22-year-old, who can play at centre-back as well as at right-back with equal comfort, took the field 33 times in the 2020/21 season.

Tottenham have registered an interest in the Japanese international, with the club even having said to be close to signing him in a deal worth £17m. However, earlier this week Gianluca Di Marzio (h/t Football.london) had claimed that Spurs’ arch-rivals Arsenal too had entered the race to sign him.

Romano, though, has dismissed that rumour, claiming that the Gunners are not in the picture for Tomiyasu’s signing. Instead, he claimed that Serie A side Atalanta are keen, but added that it was Tottenham who are leading the race to sign the 22-year-old Japanese defender this summer.

The journalist also said that the Bologna star himself is keen on signing for Tottenham.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

A versatile player capable of playing at right-back and centre-back, Tomiyasu would add a lot of value to the Tottenham squad. At 22, he still has his best years ahead of him as well. With the defender keen on a switch, and seemingly no other threat, Spurs should be able to get this deal over the line in the near future.
