Tottenham target Miralem Pjanic set for Italy return from Barcelona

According to Calciomercato (via SPORT h/t football.london), Tottenham may have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Miralem Pjanic, who is set for a return to Italy.

Pjanic signed for Barcelona only last summer from Italian giants Juventus in a deal worth £54m but endured a torrid debut campaign during which he was overlooked constantly by manager Ronald Koeman. Indeed, he featured just 30 times in 2020/21, with a large portion of those appearances coming from the bench.

Miralem Pjanic of Barcelona could form a great duo in Tottenham midfield with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

With Barcelona needing to trim down their wage bill this summer in order to make room for Lionel Messi’s contract renewal, Pjanic, who is one of the highest earners at the club, is set to be sold. And, his situation had led to strong interest from a host of clubs in England, including Tottenham Hotspur.

Apart from the Lilywhites, the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea had also shown a keenness in Pjanic in the current transfer window. However, all the three London clubs have now been dealt a blow in their pursuit of the 30-year-old Bosnia & Herzegovina international, as per the report.

This is because Pjanic could be on his way back to Italy this summer. Indeed, the former AS Roma and Juventus midfield mainstay is on the radars of Serie A champions Inter Milan. And his agent, Fali Ramadani, is set to fly to Milan in the coming days to hold talks with the Nerazzurri over a summer move.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

Pjanic may have endured a difficult year in Barcelona but would have been a good addition to the Tottenham midfield with his experience at the highest level and ability to dictate the tempo of the game from deep midfield areas. However, a move now appears off the table with the Bosnian seemingly heading back to Italy.
