Tottenham Hotspur still working on an agreement for Cristian Romero

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Tottenham Hotspur are still in negotiations for Atalanta defender Cristian Romero.

Romero came through the ranks at Argentine club Belgrano before moving to Italy in January 2018 with Genoa. He was signed by Juventus in 2019, before being loaned to Genoa. He spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Atalanta and was deservedly named the Serie A Defender of the Year.

He was also part of the Argentina side that won the Copa America and is a player in demand. Tottenham is keen on a new centre-back and appear to have turned their attention to landing Romero.

Atalanta CEO, Antonio Percassi has gone on record to state that while Tottenham are interested, they will need to cough up the cash to land their man. He goes on to state that the 23-year-old is one of the best young centre-backs around and that Atalanta will only sell if the right offer is made.

“He’ll stay if we don’t receive the right bid, as he’s one of the best centre backs.”

Talks are currently ongoing and it remains to be seen what the future holds. Fabio Paratici is familiar with the player given his affiliation with Juventus and could make him a key piece in his rebuild of Tottenham.

Romero is still technically a Juventus player on loan at Atalanta. The Argentine’s loan at the Italian side runs until 2022. Atalanta had the option to make his transfer permanent for €16m next summer, but they are ready to do so this year itself before selling him off a handsome profit. (h/t IBTimes)

It would appear that Atalanta are not averse to selling their star man. All it takes is for Spurs to make the right bid. Whether the Argentine will now joining teammate Pierluigi Gollini in moving to North London remains to be seen.

Spurs are in the market for defensive reinforcements. Toby Alderweireld could be on the move this summer while the likes of Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez have failed to impress consistently. While Joe Rodon is an option, Nuno Espirito Santo could do with more options to call upon. Landing Romero will give him just that.
