Injury could rule out Cristian Romero for start of the new season with Tottenham Hotspur
According to football.london, Cristian Romero could miss the opening few games for Tottenham Hotspur this season as he recovers from a knee injury.
The 23-year-old Argentine international centre-back joined Spurs last week in a loan deal with an option to buy for £42,5million. While the word ‘option’ is used to denote the deal, it is understood that the Lilywhites are likely to pay the money next summer.
That means he could be a Spurs player for effectively six years – with a five-year-long contract ready to be signed after his loan spell at N17 ends next summer. Atalanta had loaned Romero in from Juventus and only made their move permanent last Friday.
But Fabio Paratici finally has his man who could take over the spot vacated by Toby Alderweireld after the Belgian’s move to Al-Duhail SC earlier this summer. However, Romero is yet to completely recover from the knee injury that he suffered this summer.
Romero injury makes him a selection doubt
It is believed that Romero injured the medial collateral ligament while playing for Argentina against Brazil in the 2021 Copa America final. He was taken off after 79 minutes but his team emerged victorious to land the coveted trophy.
That, however, pits Romero as a doubt for Spurs’ opening games this season. The Lilywhites begin their season with a mammoth fixture against Manchester City on 15th August.
An away trip to Wolves follows a week later before they end the month of August with a home game against the newly-promoted Watford.

It would be a bonus for the fans if they get to see Romero in action as early as next weekend. But if he doesn’t start, Nuno has the option to choose a central defender pairing (or trio) from the likes of Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez, Japhet Tanganga, and Joe Rodon.
