Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur make enquiry for Lionel Messi
In a truly astonishing piece of news from ESPN reporter Diego Monroig (h/t football.london), Tottenham Hotspur have been named as one of the six clubs that have made an enquiry about Lionel Messi.
The Barcelona superstar has left Barcelona after running down his contract at Camp Nou. While the Catalan giants and the Argentine wanted a renewal, the financial situation at the club has prevented any such dealing.
Messi held an emotional press conference on Sunday at Camp Nou where he revealed that he would not be a Barcelona player this season. That brings to an end quite arguably the greatest individual career by any player for one club.
But the focus has since shifted aggressively towards figuring out which club the Argentine will join next. Spurs’ name being in the mix would raise eyebrows but we have often seen in football that nothing is impossible.
Messi to Spurs?
The Lilywhites have already signed Messi’s Argentina teammate, Cristian Romero and are also linked with Lautaro Martinez. The trio, of course, won the Copa America with La Albiceleste this summer.
Messi clarified that his yet to decide where he wants to go next. However, he responded to the links between him and PSG, who are linked with Messi alongside Atletico Madrid, and mentioned that it remains a possibility.
“That’s honestly one possibility [PSG], to reach those heights. At the minute, I’ve got nothing agreed with anybody. When the press release was released, I got a lot of calls from many clubs interested. At the minute I have not got anything closed, but we are talking about a lot of things.”

Now it has emerged that Tottenham, too, are among the clubs to have enquired about the Argentine superstar. While Messi joining Spurs would be a dream signing for any Spurs fan, they should take any such possibility with a pinch of salt.
