Tottenham to face Pacos de Ferreira in UEFA Conference League playoffs

According to Evening Standard, Tottenham will be facing Portuguese side Pacos de Ferreira in the UEFA Conference League playoffs. Spurs will be playing the first leg of the tie on the 19th of this month and the second one will be a week later.

It was not one of the best seasons for Spurs last time around. We finished seventh in the Premier League, meaning that we missed out on Champions League and Europa League qualification. It’s a steep fall by a side that played in the Champions League final two seasons ago.

Spurs went all the way to the final in 2019

Tottenham were almost looking like they would miss out on European football this season. However, UEFA established a new third tier of the continental competition – the UEFA Europa Conference League. For Premier League sides, it meant that the side finishing 7th would be playing in the competition but only through playoffs.

Spurs will now be playing the playoffs against Pacos de Ferreira after the latter went on to beat Larne in the previous qualifying round. The games are scheduled to take place on the 19th of August and the 26th of August. Post the playoffs, the group stage draws will be made a day later (h/t Evening Standard).

For now, Tottenham are still not guaranteed European football. They will have to get past the Portuguese side in the playoffs first. However, given the gulf in quality, one can expect Spurs to go through without much fuss. Nuno Espirito Santo will be hoping he can have some sort of European football in his first season in charge.
