Tottenham eyeing Samuel Umtiti as Pau Torres alternative

According to transfer news from Football.london, Tottenham have lined up Barcelona star Samuel Umtiti as an alternative to Pau Torres. The Villarreal defender wants to play Champions League football and has hence, rejected a move from Spurs. However, Barcelona have made Samuel Umtiti available which has perked up the ears of Fabio Paratici at Spurs.

Spurs are on the lookout for further defensive reinforcements. The club have already signed Cristian Romero but it must be remembered that Toby Alderweireld and Juan Foyth left the club as well. That has led Fabio Paratici to look at potential options such as Takehiro Tomiyasu, Jules Kounde and Pau Torres. The latter was actually the subject of a move to Spurs.

But his wishes of playing in the Champions League has made it rather difficult. As it is known, Spurs will be featuring in the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League this season. However, Paratici is not willing to give up on Torres and opes to put in additional effort to get him. Aside from Torres, it is the surprising name of Samuel Umtiti that has come on the radar of Spurs.

The Frenchman is a player Barcelona are trying hard to offload after his rejection of several offers from suitors. They have now sent an ultimatum that his contract will be terminated if he does not agree on a deal to move.

Spurs have held an interest in the defender previously but the current situation has put them on alert. If Spurs want, they could go and sign him for a cut-price deal as Barcelona are getting desperate to offload him.

The jury still remains out on Umtiti. As talented as he is, there are far too many injury risks tied with a move for him. He has hardly featured on a consistent basis for Barca over the last few seasons. On his day, Umtiti can be a top-notch defender but his injury record is a major concern. It remains to be seen if Paratici and Tottenham go after the Frenchman.
