Daniel Levy set to be appointed Premier League representative in the ECA
According to The Athletic (subscription required), Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is set to be appointed as the Premier League representative in the ECA. Levy will be replacing Ed Woodward for the role in the European Club Association. Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil and Inter Milan’s Alessandro Antonello are also expected to join the Committee.
On 18th April, 12 elite European clubs passed the proposal of a new ‘European Super League’. The new tournament was supposed to be a closed affair with its 12 founding members and a few other clubs. The entire idea and the proposal irked the footballing community, sparking widespread protests.
Within 48 hours, all the Premier League clubs withdrew one by one. The ESL plan collapsed spectacularly before even becoming a reality. However, it had various repercussions with the likes of Ed Woodward and Andrea Agnelli having to step down from their roles and position on the ECA after spearheading the project alongside Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.
Now, Daniel Levy is set to take over Woodward’s position as Premier League representative in the ECA. Levy was running against Ferran Soriano of Manchester City. However, the Spurs chairman had the support of several Premier League clubs and is now going to take the position (h/t The Athletic).
