Transfer News: Tottenham considering an offer for Antonio Rudiger

According to transfer news from 90min (h/t Express), Tottenham are considering a swoop for Antonio Rudiger. The Chelsea defender is said to be some way away from agreeing a new deal with his current one expiring in less than a year. Provided his contract runs out, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is prepared to go after the German.

Over the last two seasons, Spurs lost two of their stalwarts in defence. Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld have left the club and their absence will be felt in a major way. Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez might have started the season well but they have not always shown the required level of consistency.

Spurs recently signed Argentine sensation Cristian Romero to bolster their backline but it would seem another name is on their radar. Antonio Rudiger is a name Spurs have long been after. During his Stuttgart and Roma days as well, Spurs tried to get their hands on him. However, they could be presented with a golden opportunity to finally land him.

Despite playing a crucial part in Chelsea’s Champions League win, Rudiger is yet to agree on a new contract. His current deal is set to end next season and should a new contract not be signed, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will go all-out on him. An attractive package could be offered to him in case he is signed as a free agent.

Rudiger may play for our rivals but there is no denying that he is a quality defender. Getting him from Chelsea will be a huge coup and a free transfer would make it all the sweeter. There’s not much to be done now though as Spurs can only wait to see how the contract talks go. Should it not work out, they are likely to pounce.
