Matt Doherty shows confidence in Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo
According to Football.london, Matt Doherty felt that Nuno Espirito Santo will eventually turn it around at Tottenham Hotspur. The 29-year-old Irish defender claimed that Nuno had changed from how he knew him at Wolves and trusted the manager to make his mark at his new club.
Over the summer, Spurs felt that Nuno Espirito Santo was the best choice to turn things around at the club. The previous season saw Spurs drop to new lows as Jose Mourinho was sacked from the position as Ryan Mason saw out the remainder of the season. Not much improved as Spurs finished seventh in the league.
Santo has been given ample support by Fabio Paratici. The Italian worked hard to get the required players and sell the deadwood. While Spurs had a blitzing start to the season that came crashing down last week when they were handed a humbling by Crystal Palace. A lot of Nuno’s decisions were under the spotlight after that.
Doherty wants Spurs to be patient with Nuno
Matt Doherty, who joined us last year, was reunited with Nuno this summer. He spoke about how Nuno can be trusted to turn things around at Spurs given time.
“He is only at the start of his reign, it takes time. You see what he did at Wolves, it takes a few seasons to master it, I am not saying it is going to take that long here, but with a bit of time and coaching and working on the training pitch it won’t be long until he has us firing.”
The defender who has floated in and out of the side under Nuno this season also added that the Portuguese is a bit different from how he was at Wolves.
“He has changed a little bit from what I remember. He has always been a top class coach, but he has had to adapt. He has changed the way he wants to play which is the main thing, he has changed the formation but his principles are still the same, he still wants to win games and play nice football. That is the main thing, that’s his way of playing.”

These are still early days and Nuno has hardly had the full squad to play with since taking over. Premier League fans do know how he transformed Wolves into one of the most consistent sides over the last three years. Perhaps Doherty is right in suggesting that all Nuno needs is time.
