Fans saddened as Tottenham Hotspur legend Jimmy Greaves passes away

Tottenham Hotspur legend and all-time leading goalscorer Jimmy Greaves has passed away in the early hours of Sunday, 19 September 2021, the club has confirmed.

One of the greatest ever strikers to have played in England, Greaves passed away at home, aged 81, the club statement revealed.

“Football will not see his like again. We extend our sincere condolences to his wife Irene, their four children, 10 grandchildren and great grandchildren.”

Jimmy Greaves is the all-time leading goalscorer for Tottenham, having plundered 266 goals in 379 matches between 1961 and 1970. Having started his career at Chelsea, he left for AC Milan, but returned to England after a short spell, joining Spurs as he helped the club reach great heights over the good part of the next decade.

During his time with the club, the legendary striker won two FA Cups, two FA Charity Shields and the European Cup Winners’ Cup as well.

He left Tottenham in 1970 to join London rivals West Ham United. Greaves was also part of the England squad that won the FIFA World Cup in 1966. He was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours list at the end of 2020.

Fans were deeply saddened by the news and they took to Twitter to share their condolences on the passing away of the Tottenham legend at the age of 81.
