William Gallas takes a dig at the Tottenham defence

Speaking to Genting Casino (h/t Football.london), William Gallas was rather critical of the Tottenham Hotspur defenders. The former Spurs man opined about how the club doesn’t have world-class defenders and aimed a slight dig at the new signings of Emerson Royal and Cristian Romero.

Tottenham went through a bit of a defensive overhaul in the summer. Long-serving stalwart Toby Alderweireld left the club while Spurs terminated the contract of Serge Aurier. They brought in the promising defender Cristian Romero from Atalanta and later on in the window, went after Emerson Royal from Barcelona.

The duo has been handed sporadic chances over the last few games. However, their defensive record was nothing to write home about as Crystal Palace and Chelsea went on to put six past them. Even Rennes and Wolves managed to get on the score sheet which does not look like a good start.

Former Spurs ace Willam Gallas was of the opinion that Spurs need world-class defenders if they want to get back into the Champions League places. He also managed to take a sly dig at the new summer arrivals of Romero and Emerson.

“To improve their defence, they have to bring in top-class players. At the moment they don’t have top-class defenders. If Spurs want to qualify for the Champions League and compete for titles they need to bring the right players at the back. At the moment they don’t have the right players. I think it will be a really difficult season for Tottenham. They need top-class defenders and they didn’t sign any top-class defenders.”

It’s still too early to judge either of the signings as they are still settling into the side and getting a picture of Premier League football. They cannot be criticised after just a handful of games and need time. Perhaps in a few months, one can reflect on their performances.
