Captain Hugo Lloris addresses talks of a new contract with Tottenham Hotspur

Speaking in an interview with Standard Sport, Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris revealed that there is nothing from the club regarding a new contract for him, but added that his focus remains on winning his first trophy with the club.

The Spurs veteran joined the club a little over nine years ago in 2012, and since then, has been an integral part of the club’s journey under Andre-Villas Boas, Tim Sherwood, Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho, Ryan Mason, and now, Nuno Espirito Santo.

While so many managers have come and gone in that time, Lloris has remained as Spurs’ constant first-choice goalkeeper between the posts. The 34-year-old has amassed 379 appearances for the club and is nothing short of a modern-day club legend.

But it seems like he is on the verge of ending his long stay with the club. Lloris’ current deal expires in the summer of 2022, and according to the former Olympique Lyonnais stopper, the club is yet to approach him with a new deal.

What next for Hugo?

“There’s nothing from the club [about a contract]. It’s not a problem, I’m totally focused. We’ll see later about [that] but there’s no issue at all. We know each other very well.”

Nevertheless, the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner with France remains focused on winning his first trophy with the club. And he believes that Spurs are now in a strong place to end the drought.

“To win a trophy is what I’m working every day for, but who knows? When you look at the club today compared with in the past, the club is in a fantastic place. But also there’s a lot of clubs in the Premier League that are working well and improving every season and it makes the League so competitive.”

Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici brokered a deal for Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini this summer. The deal is an initial loan move with an obligation to make it permanent. If Lloris is to be released as a free agent, the 26-year-old Italian may well be his successor at N17.
