Pape Matar Sarr ‘may not be allowed’ to leave Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur star Pape Matar Sarr ‘may not be allowed’ to leave the Lilywhites in the upcoming transfer window, according to Spanish outlet Relevo (h/t Express).

La Liga outfit Sevilla are one of the clubs eyeing the 20-year-old. However, the North London side are ‘closed’ to the idea of letting the midfielder leave the club in January despite his lack of game time.

Sarr signed for Spurs in the summer of 2021 from FC Metz in France. However, the youngster spent the previous season on loan with the Ligue 2 outfit. He was a key player for the Maroons as they tried to survive the drop from the top flight.

Since the 20-year-old’s arrival, Antonio Conte has been reluctant to use him. The midfielder is yet to feature for the club’s first team and has only found game time in the youth side.

While Sarr has not played any minutes under the Italian manager, Aliou Cisse trusted the youngster to play for Senegal at the 2022 World Cup. He came on as a substitute against Qatar and played a full half against England in the round of 16.

The 20-year-old is a versatile player capable of playing in multiple positions in the middle of the park. However, it seems Conte does not trust the former Metz star at the North London side.

Currently, the Italian manager has a number of quality midfielders to count on. Rodrigo Bentancur has been quality for us in the middle of the park since his arrival from Juventus in January.

The Uruguay international is the only first-team star in the engine room with some attacking nous. The likes of Yves Bissouma, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp are more defensive-minded.

Thus, Tottenham could seemingly give Sarr a chance to showcase what he can bring to the table. If Conte has no intention of using the 20-year-old, it will be wise to allow him to leave on loan in the upcoming transfer window.
