Newcastle United set to sack Steve Bruce before Premier League showdown vs Tottenham Hotspur

According to Daily Mirror (h/t Express), Newcastle United are set to sack Steve Bruce before the Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur next weekend.

The Magpies have had a change in ownership with their new Saudi owners ambitious to reinstate lost glory at St. James’ Park. And the first casualty during their tenure could well be Bruce.

The former Manchester United defender has made a name for himself as a manager after retiring from playing football, but during his incumbency this season, Newcastle sit at a lowly 19th in the league.

The club endured a torrid summer that saw no real investment and that translated to results on the pitch. But with the takeover now confirmed, some big steps are set to be taken at St. James’ Park.

Bruce out already?

The lunch-time kick-off against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, 16th October, would have been his 1,000th game as a manager. But the report adds that the club are ready to axe him before he can manage even one game with the Saudis as the club’s owners.

Graeme Jones, Bruce’s assistant manager at Newcastle, is set to replace him for the game next Sunday. It is also claimed that neither of Zinedine Zidane, Antonio Conte, and Roberto Mancini will be replacing Bruce, who will receive around £8million in compensation after being sacked.

Having a new manager could give some teams added boost, but it also has the capacity to destabilize a club in the short run. Spurs would be hoping for the latter to be the case, although there isn’t much destabilization left to add to Newcastle’s already poor start.
