Michel Vorm highlights the importance of Eric Dier in this Tottenham Hotspur backline
In conversation with Stadium Astro (h/t Football.London), former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Michel Vorm spoke about the importance of Eric Dier in defence.
Dier has maintained his regular starting position in the lineup under Nuno Espirito Santo. The Spurs defender who had started out as a defensive midfielder early in his career soon became associated with the role of a centre-back during Jose Mourinho’s term as manager of the Lilywhites.
The 27-year-old has cemented a place at the back in this Spurs side. The defender was praised for his action during St James’ Park on Sunday that helped save the life of a Toons fan.
Tottenham went a goal down early in the game courtesy of a beautiful header from Callum Wilson. The Lilywhites then came back well with some amazing finishes from Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Kane, and Son Heung-Min. A freak own goal from Dier resulted in a nervous finish to the match but the north Londoners came away with all 3 points.
Vorm spoke about Eric Dier and the multilingual abilities that help him communicate better throughout this Spurs backline:
“The good thing with Eric Dier is he speak Spanish, he speaks Portuguese, obviously he speaks English. That’s also an easy thing with Emerson [Royal] on the right, [Cristian] Romero next to him and [Sergio] Reguilon on the left because the [lack of a] language barrier, that’s also a good thing and I think if they go from there, I think that those four could be a solid defence”
With Emerson Royal, Sergio Reguilon, and Cristian Romero at the back, the English defender is the more experienced of the lot in a relatively young backline. Dier may sometimes get scrutinized for his lack of consistency in matches but the club are still looking to create a stable central-defensive duo at Tottenham Hotspur.
