Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez touted as a potential replacement to Hugo Lloris at Tottenham Hotspur

According to The Independent (h/t The Express), Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez is leading a four-man shortlist made by Tottenham Hotspur as they seek a replacement for the outgoing Hugo Lloris.

The French goalkeeper is in the final year of his contract at the North London club and terms over a new deal are yet to be agreed. If an agreement is not met between the 34-year-old and the club, a replacement would be needed at the start of next season.

Spurs are thought to be already planning for this scenario and have devised a four-man shortlist to replace their club captain. Napoli’s Alex Meret and Real Sociedad’s Alex Remiro are potential options, while West Bromwich Albion shot-stopper Sam Johnstone will be eligible to talk to foreign clubs in January due to his contract issue at the Hawthorns.

However, the player at the top of this list is Aston Villa ace, Emiliano Martinez. The Argentine came to the fore towards the end of the 2019/20 season and shined for Arsenal due to an injury to Bernd Leno.

It was a long journey for the goalkeeper, especially after going out on loan to as many as six clubs during his tenure in the red half of North London. However, he sealed a move to Villa Park last summer and has been one of their best players since.

However, Spurs will need Martinez to push for a move out of Villa as the shot-stopper is tied down to a long-term contract at the club. The 29-year-old, in turn, has no plans of doing so as he recently reassured his future to the club.

Thus, it is an avenue Tottenham can look at but they will need to put considerable effort to get a deal over the line. Regardless, this scenario will only play out if Lloris leave next summer, a situation the club are likely to address once the French international has less than 6 months on his deal.
