Former Spurs manager affected by Conte’s appointment at Tottenham

How Tottenham Hotspur hiring Antonio Contehas impacted Jose Mourinho

According to Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Express), the appointment of current Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has had an effect on former Spurs manager Jose Mourinho.

The rivalry between the Italian and Portuguese managers has been going on for a long time. They faced each other in the Premier League before during their time at Chelsea and Manchester United respectively.

Mourinho had an 18-month spell with the Lilywhites which ultimately ended on a sour note earlier this year. He has since taken over the managerial role at AS Roma. The Italian club is currently situated in 6th position in Serie A.

Conte and Mourinho have both coached and won the Scudetto with Inter Milan. The Portuguese manager also managed to win the treble with the Nerazzurri during his peak as a manager but has struggled to achieve those same results in the last few years.

The coaching duo have been at odds with each other and have traded insults from time to time during their heated rivalry. The 52-year-old manager is already trying to instil his brand of attacking football at N-17.

Conte is said to have already stamped his authority at the North London club with his techniques and rules. The Italian manager has banned ketchup and mayonnaise from the canteen and the players were put through a gruelling training session.

The 52-year-old Italian manager is known for transforming clubs and instilling a winning mentality. He helped Inter Milan to the Serie A title after a long wait of 11 years. His intense style of play has been enjoyed by the supporters of various clubs until now.

Mourinho on the other hand has always used a very pragmatic approach and relied heavily on his backline to hold a tight ship. It could be safe to say that both of these world-class managers have hugely contrasting footballing philosophies.

The Italian helped change the dimension of several teams in the past and the Tottenham Hotspur faithful will be hoping that Conte can do the same with the Lilywhites. The supporters will also be hoping that the 52-year-old can finally brig some silverware to N-17 which did not happen under Mourinho.

Mourinho and Conte have now managed three clubs in common, namely Inter, Chelsea and now Tottenham. If anything, the latter’s latest assignment could show us the starkest difference between the pair in today’s game.
