Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has an important decision to make.
Speaking to BBC Scotland’s Sacked in the Morning Podcast (h/t Daily Star), Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has revealed that Daniel Levy had passed up the opportunity to sign Eden Hazard back in 2012 from LOSC Lille.
The 30-year-old was already a force back in his days in France before he became well-known worldwide during his time at Chelsea. He is arguably the Blues’ best player during his era at Stamford Bridge and has helped them to attain priceless silverware.
However, Redknapp revealed that Tottenham had the chance to get his services when he was wreaking havoc at Lille. Hazard had won back-to-back Player of the Season awards during his time in Ligue 1. The former Spurs boss mentioned that the winger was the biggest transfer regret of his career.
“Probably Eden Hazard when I was at Tottenham. Joe Cole rang me at Lille and said he was playing with the best player he had ever played with. I went to watch him and he was fantastic.“
The ex-England international added that Joe Cole had tipped him with the information, and he was interested. He said that he had met the Belgian and his representative in a hotel, and an agreement was in place for a move to the North London club.
“I met him in a hotel room with his agent and he was prepared to come to Tottenham. I think it was £16m at the time but Daniel Levy wasn’t prepared to pay the money.”
The Belgian forward eventually joined the West London club for £32m and went to become one of their greats. The revelation would leave a sour taste in our mouth since we could have got one of the best players the Premier League has ever seen.
With the arrival of Antonio Conte, we hope to see the Chairman spend more in the transfer window so that we do not lose talents like Hazard in the future.
