Tottenham Hotspur hope PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino takes over from Antonio Conte after his tenure

According to The Athletic (Subscription Required) [h/t The Express], Tottenham Hotspur are hoping that PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino will re-join them after Antonio Conte leaves the club.

There have been a lot of managerial changes at Spurs over the last two years. Jose Mourinho took over after Mauricio Pochettino was sacked in November 2019. However, the Portuguese left the club even before completing his first full season in charge.

There were a lot of options to ponder over for the successor of the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager. Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici also held preliminary talks with Pochettino, but that move failed to go through.

In the end, they hired Nuno Espirito Santo. It looked like a risky move, and it was. The former Wolves boss was sacked after just four months into the job, following a dire run of results. Antonio Conte was appointed at the start of this month, and perhaps Spurs have a winner in their hands.

The 52-year-old has won league titles in England and Italy, including guiding Inter Milan to Serie A glory last season. Thus, he is a fine appointment and could help the club compete for the biggest trophies.

However, his contract lasts until the end of the 2022/23 season, with the club having the option to extend it for one more year. But Spurs want Pochettino to replace the Italian. It is thought that the former Inter boss will leave the club in a situation that will be perfect for the Argentinian to take over.

A return is also apparently very possible due to the healthy relationship between Levy and the PSG boss. While this deal sounds good in theory, Conte has a better CV than Pochettino. The 2017 Premier League-winning manager is viewed as a ‘short-term fix’ rather than one for a long-term project.

Although his last two appointments have not lasted over two years, he needs to convince Tottenham that, with the right investment, he could propel the club to glory. The London club have huge ambitions, and Conte needs to prove that he is the right man to fulfil them.
