FC Barcelona are thinking of terminating the contract of Samuel Umtiti who has been linked to Tottenham Hotspur
According to the Spanish news outlet Sport (h/t Football.London), FC Barcelona are contemplating on ending the current contract of Samuel Umtiti who has been linked to Tottenham Hotspur recently.
The 28-year-old defender has struggled to make a place for himself in the starting lineup with the Catalan giants. Whilst the defender made 16 appearances for the Spanish club across all competitions in the 2020-21 season, he is yet to make an appearance for the Camp Nou outfit this campaign.
The French international was believed to have fallen out of favor under former manager Ronald Koeman. It is now thought that current boss Xavi also doesn’t have him in his future. This could mean that Barca could opt to terminate his current contract in order to trim the wage bill.
As of March 21st, the debt of Barcelona had risen to €1.35bn ($1.59bn). This has been a major issue and President Juan Laporta has been trying his best to fill the holes of what financially seems like a sinking ship at the moment.
The French defender was earlier linked with Tottenham Hotspur. He has had a difficult time with Barca and injury woes may have hindered his progress substantially at times. With the recent injury issue of Argentine defender Cristian Romero, the Lilwyhites could be looking for a replacement at centre-back.
In an interview with Mundo Deportivo via Stadium Astro (h/t Football.London) Umtiti highlighted his current plight at Barcelona:
“I never thought this could happen to me in this club because I love it, I love this club. I do everything, everything to be okay. I have had hard times due to injuries but in the end I do my job and this is the most important thing for me. Work and train hard, and people do not know it.”
The Italian manager has instilled a very attacking style of play at N-17. His system employs a three-man defence which means that the North London club could use an extra central defender to prepare themselves for any unforeseen circumstances such as injury issues.

It seems like the French professional footballer could be looking at a change of scenery very soon. Despite the links, it remains to be seen whether the 28-year-old will make his way to Tottenham or look to ply his trade elsewhere.
