Antonio Conte says Ryan Sessegnon can get better for Tottenham Hotspur after Norwich display
Ryan Sessegnon was on the bench against Norwich City for Tottenham Hotspur this weekend but was substituted for Sergio Reguilon in the first half by Antonio Conte. The Spaniard picked up a knock and was subsequently taken off, and the boss later stated that the injury wasn’t too severe.
Sessegnon had a decent game overall and did well to put behind the ghosts from his last game. His previous involvement was against NS Mura in the UEFA Europa Conference League, where he was sent off in the first half as he picked up two yellow cards.
Speaking in the post-match press conference (h/t Football.London), Conte expressed his delight with the 21-year-old but conveyed that he can do much better than what he has shown. The manager suggested the player should gain more confidence to complement his physical and technical qualities.
“Sessegnon came in and I think he played a good game. I’m sure that he can do much better and he has quality. He has quality as a player with great power, he’s strong physically and he needs to take confidence. He needs to take confidence from the atmosphere and the stadium.”
“Sess is a young player but if you stay in the Tottenham squad it means that you deserve to be here and you have to deserve this. Today, at the end, I’m pleased because I’ve seen him for 75 minutes and he played a good game, but I know he can do much better. He has the quality physically and technically.”
Step by step
The Englishman has the backing and belief of the 52-year-old boss, and he needs to use it to his advantage to make a mark at the club. It remains to be seen what the extent of Reguilon’s injury would be but since the setback was not concerning, Sessegnon probably would not get many chances via this avenue.
The young full-back would miss the next game for Spurs due to getting the marching orders against Mura. The North Londoners will face Stade Rennes on Friday, where they will try to get all three points to qualify for the knockout rounds.

However, he would be in contention to feature against Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday. But, with competition from the 24-year-old Reguilon who has looked great under the Italian, he would need to work hard to get into the starting team.
He has shown what he can do during his loan spells at Fulham and Hoffenheim. It’s now time to put to use what he learnt during his time away from Spurs. With Ben Davies now being utilized in a back three, Sessegnon has avenues opening up in the starting XI.
