Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur target Bologna midfielder Mattias Svanberg

According to the sports journalist Nicolo Schira (h/t ESPN), Tottenham Hotspur have identified Bologna midfielder Mattias Svanberg as a potential target ahead of the January transfer window. His performances in Italy have attracted attention from several clubs, becoming one of the most sought-after youngsters in the process.

Manchester City have scouted the 22-year-old during the league match against AS Roma this month. It is unclear whether they have shortlisted him on the transfer list or not. However, he does have admirers from other clubs as well.

The Swedish international will enter the final year of his contract at the end of the current season. That would create an opportunity for us to try our hand at a deal as the Serie A club would be in a dangerous situation of losing him as a free agent in 2023.

Who is Mattias Svanberg?

The Bologna youngster is a versatile midfield player, possessing the ability to cut through defences with his passing skills on occasions. His defensive output is also solid, which has seen him being used in a variety of positions in this campaign.

Since moving to the Italian club in 2018, the Sweden star has become a crucial part of the team and has racked up 107 appearances. He also has nine goals alongside seven assists in the process, making him one of the more exciting midfielders in the Italian top flight. His contributions have helped theVeltri to a mid-table position so far this season as they sit 10th after 19 games.

Svanberg has also made his mark on the national team and was involved in the 2020 Euro campaign. His qualities on both ends of the pitch would make him a useful addition for Antonio Conte as he continues building his project at the North London club. He would also inject some drive and fresh blood into the team and could reach newer heights with proper guidance.

It remains to be seen whether we will try our cards to sign the midfielder next month when the transfer window opens. There is always the option to wait and pounce when his contract situation aggravates or becomes clearer, but it would depend on the stance that our club takes regarding him.

Even if we have the depth, it is rarely a poor call to add a young, exciting talent into the mix. Moussa Sissoko departed N17 this summer while the likes of Dele Alli and Giovani Lo Celso are yet to make a massive impression under Conte with their performances.

The added competition that Svanberg may bring in the coming years is something that should not be understated. Oliver Skipp is really making his mark under the former Inter Milan boss, but Svanberg can also have a role to play as we look to build a formidable squad to challenge for trophies in the next several years.
