Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur join race to sign West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone

According to talkSPORT (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur have joined the transfer race to sign West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone amidst interest from other Premier League clubs. He has been splendid with his performances in the Championship and could potentially move to Premier League in the future.

Newcastle United, Southampton and West Ham United are also vying for Johnstone’s signature as they try to bring him in to boost their squad. His contract will enter the final six months next month, which has opened up the opportunity for them to try their cards to initiate a move.

Tottenham have been linked to other goalkeepers as Hugo Lloris would become a free agent at the end of the season. They are looking at options just in case if the club captain does not sign an extension in the coming months.

Johnstone- Lloris replacement?

The West Brom keeper has played 23 matches in the Championship and has conceded only 16 goals while having 11 clean sheets to his name. His excellent displays have helped his team to remain in contention for making it to the top flight for the next season.

The Englishman has garnered sufficient experience over the years and could prove to be a solid replacement for Hugo Lloris if we fail to reach an agreement with him. Ideally, we would want the skipper to stay, which is especially the case, considering his performances in the recent matches.

At the same time, we cannot idly sit hoping for the Frenchman would sign a new deal with us. As such, we should cover all the possibilities and safeguard ourselves for a worst-case scenario. Even if he renews his contract, we could get the England keeper as a backup if the club decided not to activate the buy option in Pierluigi Gollini’s deal.

There could potentially be some issues if the Championship club achieves promotion at the end of the campaign. That is if the 28-year-old signs a new offer as a result of it. Even if they do that, the prospect of playing for us is much better than playing in his current team. With all due respect, they do not hold the same weight as us, and we could provide him with an environment to get more exposure.

The Qatar World Cup will take place in the coming year, so playing for a bigger club could boost the chances of the England international to gain a spot in the national team. However, we do have to brush off the competition, and it remains to be seen how it would pan out in the coming months.
