Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur see their opening bid for Luis Diaz rejected by Porto

According to Portuguese outlet SIC Noticias (h/t Football.London), Porto have rejected a £50million bid from Tottenham Hotspur for Luis Diaz.

Luis Diaz is turning heads in the Portuguese league. The Columbian is currently the top scorer of Liga Bwin and has consistently provided brilliant performances for the last few matches. The 24-year-old has bagged 15 goals and six assists in 25 appearances in this campaign for the Dragons.

Not only at club level, but the former Junior FC forward has also been impactful for his national team, Colombia, after scoring the most goals in Copa America this summer alongside Lionel Messi.

Liverpool have been linked with Diaz in recent weeks. However, surprisingly, Tottenham Hotspur seemingly made the first move in the pursuit. It is believed that Spurs registered a €60m (£50m) bid for the 24-year-old- one that the Portuguese side has rejected as they want somewhere in the region of €80m (£67m) for any move to take place.

Antonio Conte currently doesn’t have a lot of options in the attacking lineup. Even though Harry Kane has found the net a couple of times after the Italian’s arrival, players like Bryan Gil and Jack Clarke haven’t made any real impact. On top of that, Spurs have faced injury issues recently with Steven Bergwijn and Son Heung-min’s unwelcome injuries.

The lack of depth is evident, and Tottenham require quality reinforcements to tackle the injury crisis. Even though Spurs haven’t been much active in the winter transfer window, it is believed that the board has agreed to splash the cash this time. Arrivals are expected to come soon, and Diaz’s signing could have been the start.

The Colombian ace could have landed the starting position in Conte’s team. The 24-year-old star’s versatility makes him a smart signing for any team- with him being able to operate on either wing and at times, down the middle of the attack. Pairing him with Son on opposite wings is certainly a tasty scenario to imagine.

However, Porto’s demand could make it tough for us to sign the player. After all, it is around £17million more than what we apparently offered. Now all that remains for us to do is either up our offer for the dynamic winger playing for a team that has two European Cups in their trophy cabinet, or sit and wait for the right opportunity to make additions to our squad.
