Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur battle Barcelona and AC Milan for Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard

According to ESPN, Tottenham Hotspur will battle Barcelona and AC Milan for the services of Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard for a transfer this summer. He has struggled to earn minutes at Old Trafford this season despite coming back from an excellent loan spell with West Ham United last term.

Lingard has a contract with the Red Devils which will expire at the end of this season. He could reach a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs this month over a free move in the summer. However, the attacker is undecided over his future since he wants to make the right choice by looking at all the possibilities.

Several other clubs are also interested in the Englishman with clubs from Italy, Spain, and England mentioned. Tottenham have not made a formal offer yet despite Antonio Conte wanting to bolster the team in the winter transfer window.

The 29-year-old wants to make Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. However, it is likely that any move for him can only be finalised in the summer transfer window. Ralf Rangnick is keen on keeping his squad intact due to their involvement in multiple competitions.

Lingard to join Spurs?

Ideally, we would have wanted the Man United ace to join us in January, considering how we need personnel in the attacking department. But it is tough to see our direct rival strengthening us even if this is their last chance to cash in on the winger. The interest from Barca and Milan would be of concern for that same reason.

But if Lingard stays at Old Trafford until the summer without putting pen to paper on a new deal, then Spurs would be wise to try and sign the playmaker. He would then be a free agent and at 29, it’s not like he is in the twilight of his career yet.

He could well be a smart signing for us especially if he recreates the form he showed in London with the Hammers. Given our lack of depth in the frontline, we could use him as a number 10 or as a winger on either side of the attack,

Bryan Gil has not yet fully adapted to his new surroundings whereas Steven Bergwijn has been linked with a move to Ajax. That leaves Son Heung-Min, Harry Kane and Lucas Moura as the only other senior options for us up front.

His experience in England is valuable and he has certainly proven time and again that he is in his comfort zone in the Premier League. Players like Lingard may not be household names, but their experience, versatility, and hunger to prove themselves time and again makes them potent options for any team to have.
