Tottenham Hotspur raise efforts to sign Peterborough United starlet Benjamin Mensah

According to Football Insider (h/t Peterborough Telegraph), Tottenham Hotspur have closed in on Peterborough United starlet Benjamin Mensah to prevent another club from entering the mix. The youngster has not yet made a mark at the senior level, but much of it is down to the injury struggles he has endured over the last year.

Tottenham have raised the pressure to get the signature of Mensah in the January transfer window itself. They want to put this matter to bed, having looked at the possibility of another club vying for his services in the future.

Spurs had tried their chances to get the 19-year-old previously, but they saw their attempts get denied by Peterborough. It remains to be seen what stance would they take this time around with the winter transfer market nearing its end with each passing day.

One for the future?

If the North London club get this deal over the line in the coming days, the Italian could be our first signing of this month. That would not fill the fans with much confidence since they have been yearning to see the club address the issues within the team through some major additions.

While the Posh defender is still very raw in terms of his abilities and skills, he has shown enough promise to warrant attention from the big boys. Antonio Conte’s side are hoping to get the transfer done at the earliest to not lose him out to others who may enter the fray.

The Italian youngster primarily plays as a right-back and has made four first-team appearances throughout his time with the Championship side. While we do need an addition at right-wingback, it would be too much of an ask for him to fulfil our requirements at this point in his career.

In a logical sense, the Peterborough star would join our youth team before trying to step up to the senior level. However, the recent departure of the highly-rated Dilan Markanday to Blackburn Rovers may hinder our attempt to sign him this month.

That is because Markanday was arguably our best academy prospect, and he had failed to garner enough chances to play at the first team despite his excellent performances. That would cause concerns to other youngsters who we may try for in the future.

It remains to be seen whether the situation with the now Blackburn star would hurt us in our pursuit to getting the Posh right-back.
