Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Ander Herrera rules out Tottenham Hotspur move due to Manchester United history

According to The Athletic Football Podcast (h/t Daily Mail), Tottenham Hotspur were unsuccessful with their attempt to include Ander Herrera as part of the loan deal involving midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, as Spurs look to offload the Frenchman to Paris Saint-Germain.

Ndombele looks likely to leave Spurs this month, with the player not getting enough first-team minutes and failing to nail down a regular starting spot since his arrival from Lyon in 2019. The midfielder remains Tottenham’s record signing but has rarely ever looked like justifying the sum we paid for him.

With Spurs locked in talks with PSG over a potential loan move for Ndombele, they were hoping to involve Herrera as part of a swap deal. However, the Spaniard has ruled out a move to Tottenham, as he would only return to England to play for his previous employers Manchester United.

Unfortunately for Tottenham boss Antonio Conte, the 32-year-old midfielder is understood to be completely happy in Paris, where he has featured regularly for PSG this season. Herrera left England in 2019 after the end of his contract at United and won the Ligue 1 title in his debut campaign.

No swap, no problem

Ndombele and Herrera left their previous employers in the same transfer window and headed to England and France respectively. While the former has seen his career go backwards, the latter has enjoyed a trophy-laden time at his new club.

It is curious how the players have now been offered chances to go back to their previous country of employment within the same transfer window once again. Ndombele may well be on his way out after he was jeered off the field against Morecambe earlier this month and failed to make Conte’s subsequent matchday squads.

Despite this setback on Herrera, Spurs are keen on adding midfield reinforcements to their squad in January, with AC Milan’s Franck Kessie and Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat on their radar. They are yet to add new players to their ranks this month.

Herrera was a crowd favourite at Old Trafford during his time at United, with the fans loving the passion and energy he brought to the middle of the park. The Spaniard could have been a useful addition to our team, with our midfield lacking the same passion and energy Herrera has plenty of, even at 32.

The former United man, however, has proven that he plays for the badge, turning down a move to N17 because of his history in Manchester. Although an obstacle in our hunt for a new midfielder, we can still hope that negotiations with PSG continue over loaning out Ndombele, who has failed to make the most of his chances at Tottenham.

The France international will go down as one of the most disappointing signings we’ve had in the Premier League, with his price tag and apparent versatility not coming through to impress fans or his managers at Spurs. It is best to cut our losses with Ndombele as soon as we can and usher in a new face this month.
