Transfer News: Liverpool on course to sign Tottenham Hotspur target Luis Diaz from Porto

According to sports journalist David Ornstein of the Athletic (Subscription Required), Liverpool are on course to sign highly-rated Tottenham Hotspur target Luis Diaz from Porto before the January transfer window deadline. This comes as a huge blow for Spurs, who were keen on securing a deal for the player this month.

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte is desperate to bring reinforcements into his side, as he attempts to turn Spurs into world-beaters. The Italian believes that his team is still far away from competing with other teams at the top of the Premier League.

With incomings a necessity for Conte, the news about Liverpool getting ahead in the race to sign Diaz will irritate the Spurs boss, as Tottenham are yet to bring in any players this month. Moreover, seeing a target potentially join one of your rivals for domestic trophies is sure to be an added salt in the wounds.

Diaz has been the talk of the rumour mill recently with many clubs taking a keen interest in the Porto winger during the January transfer window. The Colombian’s stock has risen after the 2021 Copa America, where he finished as top-scorer alongside Lionel Messi, despite his national side only managing a third-place finish in the tournament.

No Diaz for Spurs?

The winger has churned up some notable performances in Portugal, with the player considered to be a tricky and speedy outlet on the flanks. A few appearances in the Champions League also added weight to the Colombia international’s name, and at 25, he is arguably in the prime years of his career.

It is now claimed that Porto expect a fee of around €60m including add-ons to be agreed with Liverpool, with the 25-year-old opting to sign for the Reds despite being heavily linked with Tottenham this month.

Liverpool seem to have pulled off a last-minute steal right from under our noses. According to Michael Bridge of Sky Sports on Twitter, the Reds may well have accelerated their pursuit of the Colombian and now want to sign him in January instead of the summer.

Spurs look devoid of ideas and energy up front, with hitman Harry Kane struggling to recreate his usual form in front of goal and the ever-reliable Son Heung-min missing from action due to injury. Diaz was expected to come in and provide the spark we needed, but it no longer looks like the case.

More Tottenham Hotspur News

This news comes only a day after it was claimed that another of Spurs’ targets, Adama Traore, had opted to move to Barcelona after being heavily linked with a transfer to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

With only a few days to go until the transfer window ends, it may be time to press the panic button as we do not seem to be getting any of our transfer targets. It is clear we need some signings to boost our team but with each passing day, it seems like we may end this window empty-handed.
