Tottenham Hotspur deal with Lyon breaks down as Giovani Lo Celso eyes Villarreal switch

According to the Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the agreement between Tottenham Hotspur and Olympic Lyon has broken down as Giovani Lo Celso wants a transfer to Villarreal. He is likely to leave N17 after falling out of favour with Antonio Conte.

Spurs and Lyon had agreed in principle to terms over a loan move regarding the midfielder. However, the La Liga side also enquired about his services which prompted him to reject the advance from the French club.

The Argentinian is hopeful that a move to Spain can be agreed upon before this January transfer window closes. As a result, Tottenham and the Ligue 1 side are now negotiating over Tanguy Ndombele. Discussions are advanced and are set to enter the final stages, with them wanting an option to buy instead of a mandatory one.

Time ticking down

This piece of news is a bit of a blow since we do not have an agreement with Unai Emery’s side for now. There is the possibility that we cannot reach common ground with them, which could mean that we have to be stuck with the 25-year-old for the rest of the campaign.

To prevent such a scenario, Fabio Paratici must make sure that we clear out the underperforming players before this window closes. We hope that the deal with Lyon for Ndombele will not break down as it did with the Argentine.

Since Lo Celso’s move to France is off the table, we are desperate to reach an agreement with the Europa League holders. In any case, we should try to offload him completely and free up the wage bill.

Not to mention, it would be best if we could also get a decent loan fee in the process. Paratici could try to buff up the amount through team achievements or performance-related clauses for our financial benefit.

But if Emery’s team are hesitant to meet the full wages, the Tottenham star must reduce the salary since he was the one who rejected the opportunity to go to France in the first place. Moreover, it would be in his own benefit as well to find his feet again ahead of the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Let’s wait and see how this situation develops in the coming hours.
