Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tanguy Ndombele joins Olympic Lyon on loan deal

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Tanguy Ndombele has left Tottenham Hotspur to join Olympic Lyon on a loan transfer for the rest of the season. He has returned to his former club in an attempt to kickstart his stagnated career following mediocre displays.

Olympique Lyonnais have an option to make the move permanent at the end of this season. They would have to pay €65million in transfer fees to get Ndombele’s services after the current campaign. The buy option will only be valid in the summer transfer window when his loan period ends, according to Julien Maynard (h/t Fabrizio Romano).

Apart from taking over some part of the salary package, Lyon will also pay a loan fee worth £1.2million. The 25-year-old also had attracted interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Everton and Valencia for a January move.

Best for all parties

This move would be of benefit to all the parties looking at the circumstances. The French club lost Bruno Guimaraes to Newcastle this January transfer window. They needed someone to compensate for that departure, which is where the Tottenham loanee comes in. Moreover, we also needed to part ways with him, considering how dire things got over the past few weeks.

The Frenchman was earning around £110,000-a-week at N17, so getting rid of a part of that sum is a boost for us. Not to mention, the loan fee would also help us financially, even if it is not a huge sum. The option to buy clause may come as a surprise to most of us since he has not recently performed at a level to warrant that asking price.

But we would certainly be hoping that Ndombele reignites his career in Lyon and subsequently makes his team buy him from us permanently. It remains to be seen if that happens and it could well be a negotiation tactic from the Ligue 1 club to seal a January loan for him.

We bought him from OL for £63million when he was playing at a high level in the French division. Recouping a sum anywhere near that amount would certainly be good business on our part, but whether that happens this summer itself remains to be seen.

More Tottenham Hotspur News

Ndombele is still a Tottenham player until the summer of 2025 but it would be a surprise if he sees out his current contract here. Antonio Conte’s intentions regarding the Frenchman were clear when he was subsequently dropped after a poor performance against Morecambe.

He would have to work very hard to force his way into the former Inter Milan manager’s side again.
