AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho rejected Tottenham Hotspur enquiry for Jordan Veretout

According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho had brushed aside an enquiry from Tottenham Hotspur to sign Jordan Veretout in the January transfer window. He had previously garnered Premier League experience during his time at Aston Villa.

Fabio Paratici had made a probe into the availability of Veretout last month in an attempt to back Antonio Conte in the January transfer market. The midfielder is keenly admired by the Italian coach, which could have prompted the enquiry from Paratici and co.

However, Mourinho quickly refuted the attempt as he was not interested in depleting his squad in the middle of a season. Tottenham eventually signed Rodrigo Bentancur late in the transfer window, having failed to land their previous targets.

Could we try again?

It remains to be seen if we would try for the 28-year-old or not at the end of this season. After all, the Portuguese coach was just not interested in a winter transfer which means that a move could still be in contention in the summer transfer window.

That theory could further be backed up by the Spurs boss’ admiration for the central midfielder. If that is the case, then we could potentially get another quality addition to our squad. While he is about to enter the twilight of his playing career, he has not shown any signs of decline just yet.

The Frenchman has featured 29 times this season and has scored four goals and eight assists across all competitions. His technical qualities are on point and cannot be questioned in any case. We could use someone like Veretout in our team, looking at the departures we had in January.

Dele Alli joined Everton permanently, whereas Olympique Lyonnais could potentially activate the buy option in Tanguy Ndombele’s contract. Giovani Lo Celso’s case is similar to Ndombele since Villarreal can get him after the loan period if the optional clause is triggered.

Even with the arrival of Bentancur, we have just four midfielders in our ranks, with Oliver Skipp, Harry Winks and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg forming the rest of the options. We need more depth to last a long season, so it would not be too much of a reach to say that Paratici could target the Serie A star again if the Italian boss remains keen. Only time will tell if that is the case or not.
