Bryan Gil reveals his family wanted him to leave Tottenham Hotspur and join Valencia

Bryan Gil claims that his family wanted him to leave Tottenham Hotspur and join Valencia this January. He had struggled to garner game time at N17, which eventually resulted in him moving back to Spain for the rest of this season.

Gil joined on a cash-plus-exchange deal which saw Tottenham fork £21million plus Erik Lamela to Sevilla the previous summer. Since moving to England, however, he has not been able to showcase the promise he had shown in La Liga.

Speaking to the club’s media after joining on loan (h/t Daily Mail Online), the Spaniard explained that he wanted to move to the Mestalla Stadium and that his family was happy with the move as well. He added that they were eager for him to move back to Spain and that he will try to enjoy his time in Valencia until the summer.

“It is a special day for me. I wanted to be here. My family is also very happy. They wanted me to return to Spain and now it’s time to enjoy the team and the city.”

Fair decision

His family’s stance does not seem to have a venomous bite to it and the way Gil has put forth his comments, it seems a genuine want from their side to be close to the Spanish international. It is highly arguable they would not want him to succeed and make a name for himself in England.

The 20-year-old did not enjoy consistent minutes or stability in position during his time with us. Despite the nine appearances in the Premier League, he could not garner even 90 minutes of total action, which goes to show the plight he was going through. He was used as a substitute late in games and was never really entrusted with starts in the league.

A return to the league where he excelled initially could be of great help considering how he struggled to earn game time at N17 even though our forward line was devoid of options at times.

The North London club believes that the Spanish international has a long-term future with them despite his struggles. And that only makes sense, given his age and relatively less time in England so far.

It remains to be seen how the Tottenham starlet’s situation develops throughout the loan period. However, he would need to be on his toes and take the chances that come his way to the fullest due to the increased competition back in England.

After all, the arrival of Dejan Kulusevski would seriously raise competition for starts, with Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura, and Stevn Bergwijn already vying for first-team minutes. The Swede’s loan move could become permanent in the summer, and if that does happen, Gil would have an added barrier to cross if he wants to become a regular in our starting XI.
