Former Manchester City star slates Tottenham Hotspur for not backing boss Antonio Conte with new signings

Talking on BBC Radio 5 Live (h/t football.london), ex-Manchester City defender Micah Richards has slated Tottenham Hotspur for not backing manager Antonio Conte in the winter transfer window with new signings.

Conte has long asked for reinforcements in his squad to fire Spurs to a different level and compete with the rest of the Premier League elite to fight for the title on a regular basis. His demands were however only cosmetically fulfilled when Tottenham signed Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Brnancur on January deadline day.

Richards, who won the Premier League with Manchester City in 2012, has urged Tottenham to back the Italian with the right players so they can achieve success, referring to the manager’s incredible track record.

“He needs to win so give him what he wants. He’s won in the past so at least he knows how to work that sort of magic at the top level, why would you not give him what he wants?”

Micah Richards has questioned why Tottenham Hotspur are not backing Antonio Conte with new signings.

The former Manchester City man was referring to Conte’s time at Juventus, Chelsea, and Inter Milan, where the manager was extremely successful in helping the clubs win league titles and knockout competitions.

What’s the point?

Spurs recently fell to their third consecutive loss in the Premier League, leaving the club in eighth place and further away from a top-four spot, which leaves their Champions League hopes in doubt.

It is no secret that Spurs are currently in a rut, but Richards has refused to blame Conte for the club’s poor form, and reiterated the need to back the Tottenham boss in the market.

“Why get an elite manager if you’re not going to give him the tools to deliver? What’s the point?”

Conte is a serial winner wherever he has managed. His CV as a manager reflects that of an elite head coach, with success in multiple leagues with different teams. His time in England with Chelsea saw the Italian win the Premier League and FA Cup.

Clearly, the manager has what it takes to succeed in the English top-flight. There can be no questions about his ability to achieve glory in the Premier League. All that the manager needs is the right tools to go about the job, with the club giving him the players he wants to succeed.

One only needs to look at Manchester City as an example, with an elite coach like Pep Guardiola given the players he requires to achieve success at the club. The fact that they are the defending champions of England is enough proof that supporting the manager guarantees trophies.

Richards is right in asking Spurs to support Conte and to give him the players he needs to take our club to a higher level. We need to be competing with the best in England and in Europe, and the club hierarchy needs to work hard in the summer to give the manager the tools he needs to achieve that.
