Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier reveals his injury plight of recurring thigh problems

Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier mentioned that he suffered from a recurring thigh injury before he made his recent return to the squad. He featured in his side’s emphatic 3-2 win against Manchester City in our latest Premier League fixture.

The Englishman was out for four matches following the victory against Watford at the start of this year. He returned to play against Chelsea just before the international break but was seen to wear strappings on his right thigh during the loss. He was out of contention once again despite the interval and only recently made it for the clash against Man City.

Speaking in an interview with Football.London, Dier revealed that he has been suffering from this repeated thigh issue for a while. The defender added that the latest one was the third time he was on the receiving end of the recurring setback.

“Very frustrating to not be able to take advantage of our winter break to take care of my thigh was very frustrating because I came back and started training again after that winter break.”

It caused me problems again so I took a bit more time this time given it’s actually the third time it’s happened this season, so I gave it a bit more time this time and hopefully, that will benefit me and my thigh and hopefully, that will be the end of it now.

No more setbacks?

“I’m doing everything possible to be able to be fit and obviously focusing on staying fit, longevity in this sport is very important and something I’m very focused on so I’m doing everything possible.”

The 28-year-old’s absence was certainly felt when he had been out of contention for us this year. Interestingly enough, our poor form aligned with his setback, which tells us how important he is to our team.

Antonio Conte had emphasised that multiple times when the Tottenham centre-back was out on the sidelines for us. Having lost Toby Alderweireld last summer and our new manager’s affinity towards playing an added centre-back in defence, Dier’s injury came at the worst time possible for us.

Dier, who also played as a defensive midfielder during his time in Portugal and in the early stages of his Spurs career, is an able defender in possession of the ball and forms a big part of our team’s defensive spine.

Since the England international has finally returned to the mix, let’s hope that the injury plight has been put behind him for the better. He must ensure that similar setbacks would not be a thing moving forward as they could derail his career.

Dier has had shaky spells during his Spurs career in the past but has done well since the Italian boss took over the managerial role from Nuno Espirito Santo.

It is now up to him to make himself available and make a name for himself by putting behind his forgettable times through solid displays. Let’s hope that is the case as the North London side continue to push for a top-four finish this season.
