“If you beat City”- Tottenham’s midfield star addresses club’s upsetting recent form

Tottenham Hotspur star Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg reflects on their recent inconsistent form

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has chipped in with his thoughts on their recent inconsistent form that has plagued them over the past few fixtures. Spurs have lost three and won two of their last five games where they followed up one result with contrasting performances on the next matchday.

Their disappointing 2-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the league was followed by a splendid 3-2 victory against Manchester City. A 1-0 loss against Burnley was next in store for us, before we produced a scintillating 4-0 win against Leeds United.

And most recently, Tottenham lost 1-0 to Middlesbrough in a disappointing result that saw us crash out of the FA Cup in the fifth round. That was perhaps our last chance to achieve silverware this season, and the inconsistent form has also affected our pursuit to secure a UEFA Champions League spot for the next campaign.

Must find a solution soon!

Speaking in an interview with William Hill for Daily Mail Online, Hojbjerg has addressed the inconsistency and has said that they are working to put things right at this moment. He also expressed that they are aware of the problem and are displeased with what had occurred.

“If you beat City away you should follow that up by not losing the game after. That’s why this question is, rightly so, asked but it’s a bit difficult to explain short and sharp, maybe it’s a bigger question?”

“But it’s something we are definitely aware of and working on and not happy with of course, at all. It’s not an opinion, it’s a fact that we won one, lost one and won one and lost one. Yeah, that’s not what you call consistency, is it? In those terms, definitely, we have to be on the right track.”

It is utterly disappointing to see our team fail to build on the momentum after impressive victories against Man City and Leeds. It certainly needs to be addressed moving forward, or we could see our chances of CL qualification diminish even further in the coming months.

Arsenal, for example, are eight points ahead of us in fourth place, having earned 48 points from 25 matches despite their slow start to the season. West Ham, Man United, and the Gunners are now our three competitors for that elusive 4th spot this season. Our inconsistency has been an issue over the past five games or so, but the signs were noticeable even before that.

Perhaps, the lack of an adequate number of options has played a part in the setback as we failed to add more depth and quality in the summer transfer window. Despite the arrivals of Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski, we saw four senior Spurs depart the club in the winter window.

“Fortunately”, since the league is the only area we can focus on in this campaign, that could end up lending us a hand moving forward. The players need to react and motivate themselves to now think of the top four spots as a trophy for this season.

It remains to be seen whether there would be a turnaround in the next few matches. Consistency must be found at all costs since we will face off against Manchester United and West Ham United in the next few games- two teams we are battling for the UCL places for next season.

Hojbjerg has often provided us with a solid base in midfield and the ex-Southampton would now be hoping that his teammates can combine to help the club out of this rut, starting from tonight when we play a relegation-threatened Everton in London.
