AC Milan ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in the race for Lille star Sven Botman

According to the journalist Pete O’Rourke via GIVEMESPORT (h/t The Shields Gazette), AC Milan appears to have an “edge” in the race to sign Lille star Sven Botman amidst interest from Tottenham Hotspur. Both clubs are expected to target him in the summer transfer window as they look to bolster their respective projects for a better future.

Newcastle United are also a potential destination for Botman at the end of this season. They were in the fray for the Dutchman in the January transfer window as they were eager to bring him to St. James’ Park. They ultimately failed to do so but are expected to return to secure his signature next summer.

However, the prospect of playing in the Champions League with Milan could sway the 22-year-old to them after this term. O’Rourke believes that could prove to be a crucial factor in determining the defender’s future destination in the summer transfer window.

“Milan are a massive club. They have been following Sven Botman for a long time and the trump card they’ve got over Newcastle is it looks like they will probably be able to offer Champions League football next season. That might just be the deciding factor in their pursuit of the Dutch international.”

More incentive for a top-four finish

It is quite normal for Champions League football to be a factor in attracting top-class talents. That seems to be the same case here as the Rossoneri are currently leading the Serie A table and could even win the league title after a long time.

As things stand, we have a lot of ground to cover compared to the Italian giants before having the chance to challenge for silverware. That being said, getting into the top four places has become even more important following this update. That is the case if the Tottenham board have plans to actively back Antonio Conte in the summer transfer window.

The recent loss to Manchester United in the Premier League has further dampened our chances of a top-four finish this season. We must turn things around at the earliest if there are plans to bring in the 22-year-old to N17 after this term.

The Ligue 1 central defender could be a necessity to add to our backline, considering the defensive issues we have endured recently. Joe Rodon is an outcast and would probably leave us next summer, whereas Davinson Sanchez has fallen down the pecking order.

Japhet Tanganga has struggled to recover from his injury issue and could be replaced in the summer. Ben Davies is not a natural centre-back, while Eric Dier has his own issues to deal with despite his importance under Antonio Conte. In such a case, landing Botman could become a priority for us. It would appear that European football could be a key factor in the transfer race. just where we stand come the end of the season remains to be seen.
