Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte sends ambition warning to club after Manchester United defeat
Speaking after his side’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday (h/t Evening Standard), Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte warned his club to match his ambitions and win trophies during his time in north London.
United completed the double over Spurs this season at Old Trafford, as Cristiano Ronaldo settled the tie with a hat-trick after Tottenham came back twice in the game after going behind.
Conte said that unlike his past clubs where he fought to win trophies, his situation in N17 was different, but insisted that he was ready for the big challenge in north London and that he was fully committed on the training ground with his staff.
“For sure it is a different situation if I compare to my past. In the past I fought to win the title or trophies. This is a big new challenge. But people can see very well the commitment that I am doing, putting in at the training ground with my staff.”
The loss against United comes as a blow to the Italian, with both teams chasing fourth spot at the end of the season to secure Champions League football next term. The defeat puts Spurs at eighth place, although they have a few games in hand.
“Same way”
Yet another season has gone by for the Lilywhites without winning silverware, extending their trophy drought since the 2008 League Cup triumph. Conte, a serial winner as manager with his previous clubs, has been brought in to fix this damning stat.
The former Chelsea manager reminded his current club that while he was impatient, he was also willing to do the work and does not lose his ambition, hoping that the north London side matches his same personality and ambition.
“I always say that I have impatience. I like to work – at the same time I want to be very clear I don’t want to lose ambition. This must be very clear. I repeat I hope we are in the same way.”
Currently lying in eighth place and chasing UCL qualification, Conte has his work cut out for him until the summer. Despite boasting of an impressive CV and known for being a master tactician, the Italian has endured a wildly inconsistent debut season.
Spurs were on a two-game winning run in the Premier League, having put away Leeds United and Everton in a convincing manner. However, Ronaldo had other plans at the Theatre of Dreams on Saturday and broke Tottenham’s streak in the league.

Conte was brought in at Spurs to bring back titles and glory to north London, and expectations were high since he came off the back of a Serie A title with Inter Milan just last season. Having won the Premier League and FA Cup with Chelsea in the past, the manager knows what it takes to succeed in England.
Although his time at the club has not panned out to be exactly what he had in mind and unlike experiences at his former sides, the summer brings fresh hope as we wait to see Conte lead the side out next season in his first full season at Tottenham.
