Transfer News: Fulham battle Tottenham Hotspur to sign Liverpool star Joe Gomez

According to reporter Graeme Bailey of Anfield Watch (h/t The Sun), Fulham have entered the race to battle Tottenham Hotspur for the services of Liverpool star Joe Gomez in the summer transfer window. He has struggled to get minutes this season so far, having fallen down the pecking order under Jurgen Klopp.

Gomez has a contract with the Reds until 2024, but is concerned about his future prospects at Anfield. Following the summer arrival of Ibrahima Konate, he is currently the fourth choice centre-back for Klopp, leading to the current plight. As such, he is at risk of not making it into the national team for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. While Gareth Southgate is an admirer of the defender, the coach will not select him if he does not play regularly.

As such, several clubs are vying to facilitate a transfer for the 24-year-old. While Fulham is in the Championship, they are expected to promote to the Premier League next term, having earned a solid lead as the league leaders. Tottenham are also in the fray, but it is uncertain whether the Merseyside club would entertain offers since the central defender could be a long-term replacement for Joel Matip.

Can Spurs sign Gomez?

Gomez’s injury struggles have also been one of the factors that led to his current plight. That being said, it seems that he is past those setbacks and signing him would not be a problem for us in any case. After all, he has fared well at Anfield whenever he was consistently selected by his manager.

If the situation does not change, we could try and convince the Englishman that he would enjoy more minutes with us. After all, we do need reinforcements in the centre-back spots looking at the recent defensive struggles that we have been going through. Not to mention, we could also see some departures next summer.

Joe Rodon, for example, has been cast aside by Antonio Conte and has not been preferred at all. Hence, it would not be wise to keep hold of him past this campaign. Japhet Tanganga, on the other hand, has been out injured and has struggled to regain fitness. Not just that, as he has had a mixed time and failed to take the chances to the full extent.

Davinson Sanchez has fallen down the pecking order, having failed to take advantage of the opportunities that came his way. Not to mention, he has not been able to get rid of mistakes from his game even if there have been considerable improvements under Conte.

More Tottenham Hotspur News

Ben Davies is not a natural central defender and cannot be depended on for longer, whereas Eric Dier has had some blips here and there as well. Even Cristian Romero has suffered at times, even though that has been mostly down to the lack of an appropriate partner to support his aggressive style of play.

Gomez can be that man, but we also have to deal with the interest from West Ham United, Everton and Newcastle United, who are looking to bring him to their respective squads. It will be interesting to see how this situation would turn out to be in the coming months ahead of next season.
