Transfer News: Arsenal rival Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign VfB Stuttgart star Borna Sosa

According to Christian Falk of BILD on Twitter, Arsenal will face off against Tottenham Hotspur to secure the signature of VfB Stuttgart defender Borna Sosa ahead of the summer transfer window. He has been one of the few shining lights for his side in a disappointing season as they are currently in the relegation zone.

Tottenham had already expressed an interest to sign Sosa as they look to boost their ranks in the wing-back position. Now the Gunners have entered the race adding to the obstacles that Antonio Conte’s side would have to overcome to bring the defender to N17 in the summer of 2022.

Last week, it was claimed that the Croatian had reached an agreement with the Bundesliga club and that they would allow him to depart next summer. That would be a boost for Spurs for sure, but the entry of our North London rivals complicates matters.

Sosa to Spurs or Arsenal?

Despite Stuttgart’s struggles this season, the 24-year-old has been in fine form so far, having scored two goals alongside seven assists from 23 matches across all competitions. He could improve on that output in a better system where his quality can be utilised to the fullest.

The Bundesliga fullback has expressed his desire to play in the Premier League before, and we can take advantage of that situation to make our case with him. However, Mikel Arteta’s side would also have the same edge, which means that we cannot afford to slip up as we did in the January transfer window.

We lost Adama Traore and Luis Diaz to Barcelona and Liverpool, respectively and cannot afford to witness a repeat if there are ambitions to raise our level and challenge for silverware. That being said, questions can be raised on whether a left-back should be an area that we should focus on or not.

After all, we have two options in Sergio Reguilon and Ryan Sessegnon in that area and both of them have excelled under Conte. Sessegnon has struggled with his hamstring yet again, though, so keeping Sosa on our shortlist is a good choice indeed. As for Reguilon, Real Madrid have included a buy-back clause in his transfer, and they can sign him this summer for around £43million.

Hence, there are some risks involved as we near the summer transfer window. It is good on the club’s part that they are preparing for the worst-case scenario by keeping Sosa on their radar.

Who knows, maybe Sessegnon could even be moved out to the wings as he has experience playing in that position from his time at Fulham. Only time will tell how our interest in the Bundesliga ace would develop in the months.
