Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur battle Arsenal, Manchester United for Napoli star Victor Osimhen

According to Italian news outlet Gazzetta dello Sport [Print Edition] via Sport Witness (h/t The Express), Tottenham Hotspur will face off against Arsenal and Manchester United to facilitate a move for Napoli star Victor Osimhen in the summer transfer window. He has performed well this season, having contributed to his team’s challenge for the Serie A title.

The three Premier League giants are not the only interested parties in the transfer race, as Newcastle United have now entered the fray. Despite the competition, the biggest roadblock would probably be the Serie A club’s stance in this case. After all, their chief Aurelio de Laurentiis had rejected a £100million offer for Osimhen back in January.

The Italian side is keen on keeping hold of the Nigerian moving forward, so it would take a considerable effort to change their intentions. That could really prove to be troublesome considering how they already denied a strong approach in the winter transfer window. Despite that, a battle is claimed to take place this summer for his signature.

Do Spurs need Osimhen?

The Nigerian has scored 15 goals alongside four assists for his side from 25 appearances across all competitions this campaign. He has recently netted a double against Udinese to keep his team in the mix to compete for the league title. His contributions have helped them to second place in the table so far, which in and of itself is a great nod to his quality.

We do need a centre-forward addition in our ranks as Harry Kane is the only natural option there at the moment. It is really baffling to see this situation happen in the first place, especially if we have ambitions to do better and put an end to our trophy drought.

Osimhen can be a useful signing, and he can be one for the future while simultaneously offering us genuine quality in the present as well. Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici have connections to the Italian top-flight and it remains to be seen how it impacts our pursuit of the Nigerian.

That does not mean we are underestimating our competition as they certainly have the capabilities to beat us in this case. However, the major concern would undoubtedly be Laurentiis’ stance regarding the African forward’s future prospects with them.

It remains to be seen whether the Spurs board can finalise a move for the Serie A centre-forward or not in the summer transfer window. We have had the likes of Carlos Vinicius Jr, Fernando Llorente, and Roberto Soldado in the past few years to support or provide backup to Kane.

But this season, we surprisingly don’t have that luxury, with players like Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn having to deputize there when necessary. Certainly, it is time for us to add another quality, natural number 9 in the mix.
