Tottenham Hotspur could sell Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as AS Roma plot transfer move

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport [Print Edition] (h/t The Mirror), Tottenham Hotspur could sell Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as AS Roma are planning to facilitate a move in the summer transfer window. The latter had tried to sign him last summer as well on behalf of the former Spurs manager Jose Mourinho.

Hojbjerg was brought to N17 by Mourinho when he was the coach of Tottenham. The boss once named him a “genius” player, and it seems that he is still in awe of the midfielder. The Special One had tried to sign him the previous summer, but he failed to facilitate a move in the end.

Surprisingly enough, the North London side are open to parting ways with the Dane if their valuation is met by Roma. The price tag is set at £33.3million, which seems to be a steal considering how he has fared since leaving Southampton. Mourinho could demand his club meet that asking price since he is “desperate” to secure the midfielder’s services, according to a report by Il Messaggero (h/t The Mirror).

Puzzling news

It is really baffling to see how the 26-year-old is being touted to be a possible departure in the summer transfer window. After all, he has been a key player for us for quite a long time and has been a dependable presence since joining us back in 2020.

While the Premier League star did have a rough phase for a short while, he has since then recovered to get back to his usual best for us. Hence it does not make sense for us to sell him in any case. Parting ways with him will only have made sense if we receive an irrefutable offer. But the current valuation does not fall into that category looking at how good he has been for us.

So it would be wise to take this piece of news with a pinch of salt unless we get more confirmation from reliable sources. One could simply ask why would we even consider selling the former Bayern Munich man when we are desperate for midfield additions anyway.

It is not like we are blessed with abundant options in that role, with Oliver Skipp, Harry Winks and Rodrigo Bentancur being the three other options. While Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso could return from their respective loan spells at Olympique Lyonnais and Villarreal, they would probably be deemed dispensable since they did fall out of favour with Antonio Conte.

Hence, we should reject any approaches from the Serie A side at all costs. We are looking to build a strong project under Conte, and selling our best players would not make sense in such a case. So we should not pay much heed to this piece of information that we received.
