Spurs Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur battle Chelsea, Man City to sign Derby County starlet Jack Thompson
According to The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur will rival Chelsea to facilitate a move for Derby County starlet Jack Thompson ahead of the summer transfer window. He is touted as the best prospect of his age in the youth academy, and prising him away would be a great piece of business for any team.
Thompson has attracted a lot of attention from the big guns in the Premier League at such a young age. That means Derby could be in line to receive a large sum in transfer fees amidst their financially stricken situation. 366 Group, who are trying to take over the Championship side, are also the representatives of the teenager.
As such, Wayne Rooney’s side could receive a large windfall, especially when the likes of Tottenham and the Blues are currently vying in this transfer race. They are not alone, though, with Manchester City also keeping tabs on the English youngster to finalise a transfer in the future.
One for the future?
Having a strong and successful talent factory in the youth system would greatly help ensure our long term stability. For that reason, we must secure the 15-year-old’s services as the shot-stopper could potentially become one of the best English goalkeepers in the future if the current trajectory is maintained.
We would face a stern challenge from our PL rivals, with Thomas Tuchel’s side and Man City currently being in a better situation than us. Fortunately enough, the West London side’s hands are tied at this moment due to the sanctions imposed on Roman Abramovich by the UK Government.
Those restrictions forced on the Champions League holders prevent them from engaging in any transfer dealings at this moment. Hence, we have the edge over them, which we must take advantage of and gain a lead in this transfer race to sign the English goalkeeper.
The Citizens would still be a threat, especially when they have been known for developing their talents under Pep Guardiola’s tenure. The Lilywhites, meanwhile, failed to build on their golden generation, and they have not used the youth system to its best in recent years.
The departure of Dilan Markanday, for example, is one such blow, which means that we need to change our plans for the academy. Buying world-class ready-made players is always an attractive option, but there will be times when we would be forced to look into the youth system.
In such circumstances, we need to ensure that the talent pool is at a desirable level and signing prospects like Thompson, who can become a future star, is the way to go. It will be interesting to see how this situation will pan out in the coming months ahead of the next season.

Hugo Lloris, who is currently 35 and on a contract that runs out in 2024, would need a long-term replacement sooner rather than later. Could Thompson be that man? Given he is just 15, it is a long shot to say that it can happen but if he joins us, there is nothing to suggest why he can’t man the posts for our senior team in the future.
Gianluigi Donnarruma, after all, made his senior debut in Serie A at the age of 16. While Thompson isn’t quite the Italian UEFA Euro Winner, if he has the talent, then age would just be a number.
