What has become noticeable over the years is that the race for the top four is arguably the most spoken about battle to take place in the Premier League throughout the season. Usually, you see multiple teams go head to head for a Champions League place, which often turns into fierce competition. But this time around, some added spice has been brought into the equation.
Of course, the added spice we’re talking about is North London rivals Arsenal and Spurs, who are battling it out for fourth at the time of writing, with the Gunners currently three points ahead of Antonio Conte’s men with a game in hand.
If Spurs are to make their way back into Europe’s top club competition, they’re going to need Arsenal to slip up, because if they do win their game in hand, they’ll be six points clear.
So, are Arsenal going to slip up? Well, after somewhat of a horrendous start to the campaign, it’s fair to say that Mikel Arteta’s side have done well consistently. Yes, there has been the odd disappointing result here and there.
But all in all, with some favourable fixtures to come between now and the end of the season, and a clean bill of health, they look to be in the best shape they’ve been in for a long time and are certainly favourites to secure fourth.
Spurs, on the other hand, appear to come off track quite often, and while they do manage to record impressive victories, too, they’re going to really have to pull it out of the bag if they’re to stand a chance of staying in touch with their fierce rivals, let alone overtake them.
While the odds may currently be stacked against them, they have a couple of things that will go in their favour. Manager Antonio Conte is a winner, and he’s got the experience and fire in his belly required. And Spurs have Harry Kane and Heung-min Son.
Talking of odds, betting companies will be having a laugh due to the flurries of activity based on the potential race for the top four outcome. Online casino platform, Party, a key player in the Entain group which has recently launched a new sportsbook, will be one of those sites currently seeing bets struck on Arsenal, Spurs and even Manchester United, who we will come onto shortly, based on results and how they impact potential Champions League qualification.
Manchester United, who are a point behind Spurs and four adrift of Arsenal, are not out of the top four race.
Again, like Spurs, they have become the architects of their own disappointments in many respects, with an unbeaten run turning from the majority of results being wins into draws. But, after beating Spurs 3-2 last time out, and with a game against Arsenal still to come, they could yet have enough about themselves to enter the fray.
