Transfer News: Tottenham told possible price tag for signing RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol

Speaking on The View From The Lane Podcast of the Athletic (Subscription Required), journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke has claimed that it could take Tottenham Hotspur more than a pretty penny to land RB Leipzig starlet Josko Gvardiol.

The 20-year-old Croatian centre-back was signed by the German side just last year as a potential replacement for the outgoing Ibrahima Konate, who joined Spurs’ PL rivals, Liverpool. And in that time, Gvardiol has clearly made his mark on the footballing world.

According to The Athletic (Subscription Required) as covered by ToTheLaneAndBack, Gvardiol is one of several top-quality names that are linked with Spurs as the club looks to prioritize signing a left-sided centre-back. Ben Davies has filled in that position for the time being.

Pitt-Brooke is one such expert who believes the hype behind the youngster and has claimed that it could possibly take Spurs around £70-80million to land the defender. That is clearly a steep price being quoted for a player with not much experience in the top flight.

“…If Tottenham were to get him, I think it would be comfortably the biggest fee Tottenham have ever paid. Tottenham paid £55m for Tanguy Ndombele in 2019. It is possible that Gvardiol would be as much as £70m or £80m.”

This would, like the journo mentioned, smash our transfer record and if it does come to that, questions could be raised by the fans if spending so much on a young player is the wisest decision we can make in the market.

However, his rise in recent times has been rapid. He has 10 caps for the Croatian national team and has already made 38 appearances across all competitions for the German team as they sit in 4th on the league table.

We can honestly do with an experienced defender at the back- someone with the experience that Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld had in the latter stages of their Spurs career. It has often seemed like we need a real leader at the back to command the defence- someone of the mould of Thiago Silva or Virgil van Dijk.

But if Gvardiol is the best possible option available in the market according to our club’s board, then it wouldn’t be a bad call to spend the cash on him. Just 20, he has a long way to go in his career and can lead our line for years to come. If we do manage to get him this summer, it would be a decade since we saw the back of our only Croatian defender at the club to date, Vedran Corluka.
