Transfer News: Barcelona enter race to sign Borna Sosa amidst Tottenham Hotspur interest

According to Spanish news outlet Sport (h/t Football.London), Barcelona have entered the race to secure the services of VfB Stuttgart star Borna Sosa amidst interest from Tottenham Hotspur. He has been one of the few shining lights for his side this season as they sit dangerously close to the relegation zone.

Sosa has been in fine form throughout this campaign despite Stuttgart struggling to find a footing in the lower half of the Bundesliga table. That has seen several major European clubs turn their attention toward him ahead of the summer transfer window. Barca are now the latest side to enter this pursuit.

Tottenham are already in the mix as they are vying to get their hands on the Croatian to add to their squad for the next term. They will also face competition from their two London rivals, Arsenal and Chelsea, with the latter having been linked with him following Ben Chilwell’s long term injury.

Spurs handed a headache?

The Catalans’ entry would be problematic for Antonio Conte’s side if the English club is actively planning to target the 24-year-old in the future. That is especially the case when it is claimed that Xavi Hernandez’s team are “scouting” the left-back ahead of a potential move.

The Bundesliga ace has been solid throughout this season, having scored two goals and assisted eight times from 25 appearances across all competitions. One has to appreciate that output considering how it has been for a side that is at risk of dropping down to a lower division.

We also must keep an eye out for the Blues and the Gunners, who could also use reinforcements in that position. As for us, we are currently stacked in that role, considering how Sergio Reguilon and Ryan Sessegnon are battling it out to get into the starting spot.

Reguilon and Sessegnon have done well for us but the Englishman is in the nascent stages of his career and it would be wise to let him gain some experience before making him our starter week in, week out. Ben Davies is an option in that spot but Conte has used him as a left-sided centre-back.

Reguilon could also return to Santiago Bernabeu as Real Madrid have the option to buy him permanently due to the £43million buy-back clause in his contract. We must be wary of that possibility since Marcelo is nearing the end of his playing career in Spain. Hence, our pursuit of Sosa is justified, but whether he would join us or not remains to be seen.

Spurs would, after all, be a step up to his current team- and that is not meant as disrespect to the Bundesliga side. The Lilywhites are one of the top teams in England and are looking on course to qualify for the UEFA Champions League this season.
